You can create menu items in advance without displaying them on your live website. This is useful when preparing future pages, planning navigation updates, or building site content ahead of launch.
Creating a Hidden Menu Item
To create a menu item that remains hidden from visitors:
- Navigate to Menus.
- Select Main Menu.
- Click Add Menu Item.
- Create the menu item as required.
- Do not assign the menu item to any of the following:
- Page
- Library module
- URL
- Any other content destination
- Save the menu item.
Menu items without a linked destination will not appear on the live website.
Making a Hidden Menu Item Live
When you are ready to publish the menu item:
- Edit the menu item.
- Assign it to the appropriate destination, such as a:
- Page
- Library
- URL
- Module
- Save your changes.
The menu item will then become visible and accessible on the live site.
Creating a Visible but Non-Clickable Menu Item
If you want a menu item to appear in the navigation without linking to a page, set its type to Free.
To create a Free menu item:
- Edit the menu item.
- Set Type to Free.
- Save the menu item.
The menu item will be displayed in the navigation but will not be clickable.
Common uses for Free menu items
- Navigation headings
- Parent menu items for dropdowns
- Future sections
- "Coming Soon" areas
- Organisational labels within the menu structure
Best Practices
- Use hidden menu items when preparing navigation ahead of launch.
- Use Free menu items when a navigation label is required without a destination.
- Periodically review unused menu items to keep your navigation organised.
Using hidden and Free menu items allows you to build and manage your navigation structure without needing to delete and recreate menu items later.
