Sitemaps are essential tools that help search engines and website visitors navigate your site more efficiently. There are two main types of sitemaps: XML sitemaps and HTML sitemaps. Each serves a different purpose, but both improve site usability and SEO.
📝 What is an XML Sitemap?
An XML (Extensible Markup Language) sitemap is a structured file that lists all the pages on your website, along with metadata like:
-
When each page was last updated
-
How frequently the page changes
-
The priority of the page relative to other pages
Purpose:
-
XML sitemaps are primarily for search engines (Google, Bing, etc.)
-
They help search engines discover new or updated content faster
-
They are especially useful for large websites or sites with deep navigation structures
Example XML sitemap URL:
Benefits of XML sitemaps:
-
Ensures all important pages are discoverable
-
Helps search engines index content more accurately
-
Provides additional context through metadata
🔧 Adding and Managing XML Sitemaps in Showoff CMS
For XML sitemaps, no manual setup is required. Showoff automatically generates and updates your XML sitemap as you add or edit content.
Removing a Page from the XML Sitemap:
-
Navigate to the page, library, exhibitor, seminar, or speaker entry you want to remove.
-
Click into the page or entry.
-
At the bottom of the page, click Page / Entry Options and navigate to the SEO tab.
-
In the Set up 'Index & Follow' meta tags option, select noindex, follow.
-
Click Submit, then Save the page or entry.
⚠️ Note: Setting a page to noindex removes it from the XML sitemap, but it will not immediately remove it from search engines. The page will be updated once search engines recrawl your site. Using Google Search Console to request a re-crawl is recommended.
📝 What is an HTML Sitemap?
An HTML sitemap is a webpage that lists your website’s pages in a user-friendly format.
Purpose:
-
HTML sitemaps are primarily for visitors, helping them find content easily
-
Can act as a navigation hub for users looking for specific sections or pages
-
Helps search engines understand site structure indirectly by following links
Benefits of HTML sitemaps:
-
Improves user experience, especially for large websites
-
Helps visitors discover content that may not be linked elsewhere
-
Can support SEO by distributing link authority across pages
