Breadcrumbs are a secondary navigation element that shows where a page sits within your website’s structure. They usually appear near the top of a page and display a trail of links, for example:
Home > Exhibitors > Company Name
From a user experience (UX) perspective, breadcrumbs help users understand where they are, how content is organised, and how to move back through the site without relying on the main navigation.
From an SEO perspective, breadcrumbs help search engines better understand your site structure and the relationship between pages. They can also improve how pages appear in search results by providing clearer context and, in some cases, enhanced search listings.
Availability of breadcrumbs depends on the template type being used.
Where do I edit breadcrumbs on my website?
Breadcrumb visibility is controlled at page level within the Page Title panel.
These settings apply to Composer 2 templates only.
Breadcrumbs are not available on Classic Composer templates.
For custom-built sites, breadcrumbs can be added on request. Availability and behaviour may vary depending on how the site has been configured.
How to turn breadcrumbs on or off (Composer 2)
To edit breadcrumb settings for a page:
Go to Panels
Select Page Title
Open the Content tab
Locate the Breadcrumbs option
Toggle the setting on or off as required
Changes are applied instantly, allowing you to fine-tune navigation and page hierarchy on a page-by-page basis.
Why use breadcrumbs?
Using breadcrumbs effectively can improve both usability and search performance.
UX benefits
Breadcrumbs can help users:
Understand their current location within the site
Navigate back to higher-level pages more easily
Explore related content without getting lost
Feel more confident moving through complex or content-heavy sites
This is especially useful for larger websites with multiple navigation layers.
SEO benefits
Breadcrumbs can also support SEO by:
Clarifying page hierarchy for search engines
Reinforcing internal linking between related pages
Helping search engines understand how content is grouped
Potentially enhancing search result listings with clearer page context
When should breadcrumbs be shown or hidden?
You might choose to show breadcrumbs when:
Your site has multiple navigation levels
Pages sit within clearly defined sections
Users may need extra context to navigate confidently
You might choose to hide breadcrumbs when:
Your site structure is flat or very simple
Breadcrumbs duplicate other navigation elements
You want a cleaner or more minimal page header
The page is a landing page where navigation should be limited
Breadcrumbs can be re-enabled at any time, so you can adjust visibility as your site structure, content, or SEO strategy evolves.
