Bounce rate has long been a key metric for measuring website performance, but with Google Analytics 4 (GA4), it has been replaced with Engagement Rate—a more refined measure of how users interact with your site.
In this article, we'll break down what Bounce Rate (or Engagement Rate) actually means, what’s considered a good or bad rate, and provide a comprehensive checklist to improve engagement and drive better conversions.
Finally, if you need expert help diagnosing and resolving issues, we can help with a full optimisation review to get your website performing at its best.
What Is Bounce Rate / Engagement Rate?
Bounce Rate (GA3 - Universal Analytics)
Bounce rate was the percentage of sessions where a user landed on a page and left without interacting further (e.g., clicking a link, submitting a form). A high bounce rate meant that users were leaving quickly without engaging.
Engagement Rate (GA4 - Google Analytics 4)
GA4 replaced Bounce Rate with Engagement Rate, which flips the measurement:
- Engaged sessions are those where users:
- Spend 10 seconds or more on the page
- Click through to another page
- Trigger a conversion event (e.g., form submission)
So, instead of focusing on people who leave, GA4 focuses on people who stay and interact. Bounce Rate still exists in GA4, but it’s now the inverse of Engagement Rate (e.g., an 80% Engagement Rate means a 20% Bounce Rate).
A Note on ASP ShowOff Platform Insights
While the ASP ShowOff platform does include basic traffic insights, we do not recommend relying on these figures for measuring engagement or bounce rate.
The data is limited in scope and based on older tracking methods that don’t reflect how users actually behave across modern websites.
For accurate, reliable, and meaningful insights, we strongly advise using Google Analytics 4 (GA4). GA4 provides a more advanced and up-to-date measurement model, including engagement rate, user journeys, traffic quality, and conversion tracking. It also allows you to segment your audience, compare traffic sources, and better understand the real reasons behind user behaviour.
If you’re not yet set up with GA4 or aren’t sure whether your tracking is accurate, we can help. Just get in touch.
What’s Considered a Good or Bad Engagement Rate?
General Benchmarks
While engagement rates vary by industry, here’s a general guide:
| Engagement Rate | Performance |
|---|---|
| 80%+ | Excellent – Highly engaged audience |
| 60-80% | Good – Strong user interest |
| 40-60% | Average – Room for improvement |
| Below 40% | Poor – Likely issues with content, UX, or traffic quality |
Bounce Rate (Inverse of Engagement Rate)
| Bounce Rate | Performance |
|---|---|
| Below 20% | Very Low – Potential tracking errors |
| 20-40% | Excellent – Strong engagement |
| 40-60% | Average – Not bad, but improvable |
| 60%+ | High – Indicates issues needing attention |
Why Is My Engagement Rate Low (or Bounce Rate High)?
A high bounce rate or low engagement rate can result from various issues:
- Weak content – Doesn’t match search intent, isn’t engaging, or lacks value
- Wrong audience – Traffic comes from irrelevant search queries
- Bad mobile experience – Users struggle on mobile devices
- Ineffective CTAs – No clear next step for users
